Lithium Cell – Classification, Structure and Design
I. Classification of Lithium Cells
Lithium cells come in many types and have a very wide range of applications. So what types of lithium cells are there?
Introduction to Lithium Cell Types
Classification by shape:
Cylindrical shape, mainly using steel shells and aluminum shells; steel shells are sealed by combining a crimping process with a cap, while aluminum shells are sealed by welding
Wound bare lithium cell, with tabs exiting from both ends; the negative electrode is welded to the bottom of the shell, and the positive electrode is welded to the cap
Prismatic Hard-Shell Lithium Cells
Prismatic small aluminum shell (CE)
Plastic shell
Steel-shell lithium cell
Aluminum-shell lithium cell + threaded terminal post
Aluminum-shell lithium cell, weldable conductive block
Aluminum-laminated film packaging
Tabs exiting from the same end or from both ends
Bare lithium cell is mostly wound, but also exists in stacked form
CE & EV
II. Classification of Lithium Cells by Material System
Lithium cobalt oxide, lithium manganese oxide, ternary, lithium iron phosphate
Below is a comparison of lithium cells with different material systems.
